TOPIC: New Velodrome Information

Re:New Velodrome Information 11 Months ago
Folks,
Further to my meeting with Jake Lovatt from Glasgow Life, here are the notes that I made from it. This is also a summary of the report that I put back to the committee this week. If anyone has any questions of points they would like to raise then please post here, or feel free to PM me. It would be interesting to get peoples thoughts on the velodrome and how we as a club would want to use it.
I make mention of the results of the online survey. I am not sure if there is facility for me to make the results of this public. However, I will investigate that. If you are interested in the results then let me know and I'll see what i can do to share these.

The survey results
We only had 15 people respond to the survey. Difficult therefore to draw too many conculsions
- Most of those who responded would be interested in using the track mainly in the winter (60%)
- 80% of respondents would be keen to use the velodrome more than monthly
- Only 20% of respondents currently compete on the track, however 60% would be interested in doing so in the future (33% are undecided)
- The appetite for paying for the velodrome varied with 46% being willing to pay between £5 and £10 and 40% between 10 and 15. If we were to price at £10 then we would need 26 riders to pay for 2 hours of velodrome time. (cost for bike hire would be on top of this). This is based on £200 for two hours of track time + £52 for two hours of coaching (coaches cost £30 for the first hour and £22 for each subsequent hour)
- There does not seem to be any reluctance to share time with other clubs

Costs
- The cost of hiring the velodrome will be ~£100/ hour.
- It will cost ~£30 per hour to hire a coach for one hour. £22 for each subsequent hour.
- The cost of hiring bikes will be approx £10/two hour session
- Bikes will have 'look' style pedals, these can be hired as well as helmets

The Velodrome will likely run in with a similar model to that used by the manchester velodrome. this has been seen as successful and gives a good idea as to what will be seen in glasgow. Information on the manchester velodrome can be found here.

Training
There will be a number of ways of getting training on the velodrome.
1) It is likely that the velodrome will run their own training sessions. These would probably run a couple of times a week with different types of training available. The coaches for this will be supplied by the velodrome
2) The velodrome itself will be available for rent. However you will need to either book a coach or supply your own
3) There is the intension to run track leagues initially on a friday and then wednesday as the velodrome user base increases

The velodrome will have one full time coach and a number of self employed coaches who will be called in when required
I got the impression that you will not be able to just rock up to the velodrome and get some track time. There will be a requirement to have a coach present to run a structured programme
Jake anticipates that a number of clubs may choose to club together and hire the velodrome together

The closed circuit track
There will be an out door, floodlit 1km closed circuit track. This will be in the shape of a u with two roundabouts at the top of each arm of the u. Prices for this have yet to be determined, however it is likely to be significantly cheaper than the velodrome and will also be available to rent
The idea is that some crits and a number of BCA races will be held on the track as well as some training
Clubs can hire the closed circuit track also. There are no plans to mandate that a coach must be present for this

Track certifications
The Glasgow Velodrome are working towards a partnership with manchester and london velodromes. A track certification at any of these velodromes will be valid at one of the others. However track certifications achieved at meadowbank will not be valid at the glasgow velodrome
It is likely that the first few months of the velodrome will involve very intensive accreditation sessions in order to build the user base.
The accreditation process will be similar to that which is running in Manchester currently (see handout)
This is effectively a 4 step process
1 Taster session
ability to ride in a line of at least four riders for 20mins at recovery pace
change from front to rear of line
four solo laps at the top of the track
2 Skills
3 Skills improver
4 Assessment
It is hoped that they will offer club accreditation sessions so that clubs can get accredited en masse and quicker. There are no precise details on this currently. Jake mentioned that there might be ways in which club riders can get accredited quicker, however this is not yet been confirmed.

There is intension to allow local clubs to visit the facility before it officially opens. Again, no details on this.

Keith,
Buried in my rather verbose post was the answer to your question. If you managed to stay awake until then, I am impressed.

I am afraid that Medowbank certification will not be valid on the glasgow velodrome. However, it is likely (although not yet confirmed) that certification gained at Manchester or London will be valid.

Hi Neill

I had a word with the guys at the Ivy last night and there are probably about 10-12 of us who would make use of the track regularly so you would probably have about 8 turning up for any session. Everyone seemed to be in favour of sharing a session with the Gales and I know the GJS guys are keen too.

Thanks for the info provided in this thread, great work. I'll post up a link to it on the Ivy site.

Thanks

I didnt know anything about this. However, happy to go along. Although equally happy for one if its more appropriate for one of the committee to go along.

The forum is not clear on when the meeting is, however. Looks like it is either the 6th or the 13th. I cant find a website for contact details for the WOSCA to check that out.

Has the club been officially informed of this? If so can you let me know?

Cheers

Neill: Roys on holiday at the moment and he certainly hasn't mentioned it to me.
If you can make it along that would be great. I cant make tomorrow night but maybe someone in the committee can offer to come along with you if you think it would help.
